The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has trained 100 small-scale dairy farmers in Oyo State as part of efforts to boost local milk production and strengthen Nigeria’s dairy value chain.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ministry said the programme, held in Ibadan, focused on improved dairy farming practices, animal health management, milk handling, and sustainable production techniques.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Livestock Development, Idris Ajimobi, said the initiative would improve farmers’ productivity and support the country’s drive toward self-sufficiency in livestock production.
“As we continue to push for self-sufficiency in livestock production, initiatives like this remind us that real transformation begins with empowering farmers at the grassroots,” he said.
Ajimobi added that the Federal Government remained committed to expanding the economic potential of the livestock sector through targeted policies and strategic partnerships.
The Oyo State Coordinator of the ministry, Florence Kalulu, identified poor animal health management, low productivity, and limited access to modern techniques as major challenges affecting dairy production.
She noted that the training aligned with the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy aimed at improving productivity, reducing import dependence, and strengthening food security.
The programme featured practical sessions on pasture development, feed conservation, breed improvement, and herd management.
Participants also received support materials, including heifers, feed, and salt licks, to improve dairy operations.
The President of the Women in Dairy Production Association, Racheal Eyitayo-Ariori, called for greater inclusion of women in dairy production, while participant Moyosore Olatunde urged increased youth participation in the sector.
