The Federal Government has unveiled plans to strengthen Nigeria’s power sector, with a target of generating 40 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources by 2060 as part of efforts to drive economic transformation.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed the target during a media briefing in Lagos, saying the administration’s reforms are aimed at delivering a more reliable, sustainable and efficient electricity sector.
Tegbe said the power sector reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda are yielding positive results through initiatives designed to improve electricity supply, attract investment and enhance service delivery.
He highlighted the nationwide electricity metering programme as one of the administration’s key interventions, noting that replacing the estimated billing system with accurate metering would restore consumer confidence and improve transparency in electricity billing.
According to the minister, the implementation of the Power Act 2023 has opened the sector to greater innovation, competition and private investment by empowering state governments and other stakeholders to participate more actively in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
Tegbe also said the Federal Government recently trained 5,000 young Nigerians in electricity metering under a nationwide recruitment programme.
He noted that the trainees are expected to be employed by electricity distribution companies (DisCos), creating jobs while supporting the metering initiative.
The minister added that the government’s ongoing comprehensive technical audit of the national transmission network is expected to improve grid reliability and ensure more stable power supply across the country.
