Environment offence: Woman sentenced to 144 hours of community service
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A woman in Lagos has been apprehended by the city’s waste management enforcement team for illegally dumping her waste into a drainage system.

The incident serves as a strong reminder of the importance of responsible waste management and adherence to existing regulations.

The environment offender, Rukayat Oderinde, residing at number 17, Hassan Ogumola Street, Ahamadiyya, Lagos, was caught red-handed on camera committing this act, which poses significant risks to the cleanliness and functionality of the drainage system.

Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, the Managing Director/CEO of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), responded to the incident by highlighting the potential consequences of improper waste disposal, especially through drainage channels.

He stressed that such actions can lead to drain blockages, causing flooding during heavy rains, disrupting daily life, and compromising the safety and health of the community.

Mr. Odumboni commended the swift action of the LAWMA enforcement team in apprehending the woman, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all residents.

The arrested woman was sentenced to 144 hours of community service by the court for violating waste management regulations.

This incident serves as a stern reminder that improper waste disposal will not be tolerated and will be met with strict enforcement.

The offender will carry out her community service for 8 hours per day, starting from the Ahmadiyya to Salolo route, for the next 18 days, contributing to the cleaning of the environment.

Odumboni urged residents to properly dispose of waste and warned of the potential consequences of non-compliance.

He encouraged them to utilize designated waste bins and containers for their household waste.

Furthermore, he implored the public to engage the services of assigned @PspOperators, who ensure seamless waste disposal, and provided the toll-free numbers 07080601020 and 617 for reporting any observed environmental infractions in their area.
