The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has launched a large-scale flood control and sanitation operation in Asaba to address persistent flooding and improve public health in the capital city.
Speaking at the launch on Monday, July 14, 2025, the agency’s Director-General, Chief Patrick Ukah, said the initiative is a key component of the government’s broader flood management and urban sanitation strategy.
He emphasized the agency’s commitment to building a flood-resilient, cleaner, and sustainable environment for all residents.
The operation includes the desilting of drains, clearing of overgrown vegetation, and evacuation of debris to government-approved dumpsites.
Ukah noted that the effort is aimed at improving stormwater flow, reducing flood risks, and enhancing environmental sanitation in flood-prone parts of Asaba.
“This exercise is vital to safeguarding lives, property, and public infrastructure,” Ukah stated.
“By ensuring our drainage systems are clear, we’re not only preventing floods but also promoting a healthier environment across the capital territory.”
He urged residents to support the initiative by avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal and adopting responsible environmental practices.
The operation is being supervised by Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment at the agency, who is coordinating field teams to ensure thorough desilting and proper waste evacuation.
Nwosu said teams of environmental health officers, sanitation workers, waste contractors, and community volunteers are being deployed across key areas of Asaba, adding that the project is being executed with strong community involvement to ensure its success.
