Bibby Marine has officially commenced construction on the world’s first fully electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV), marking a significant advancement in sustainable maritime operations.
The keel-laying ceremony took place at the Armon Shipyard in Spain, where Jonathan Lewis, CEO of Bibby Line Group, welded a historic 1807 coin into the keel, symbolizing the company’s legacy and commitment to innovation.
This hybrid-powered vessel, weighing 6,700 gross tons, is designed to support offshore wind operations with zero-emission capabilities.
Once commissioned in 2027, the eCSOV will provide accommodation for up to 120 personnel and offer commissioning and operations and maintenance (O\&M) support for up to 30 days at sea without emissions.
The vessel is engineered to significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption within the offshore wind industry, aligning with broader efforts toward cleaner energy and maritime sustainability.
Bibby Marine began exploring zero-emission vessel concepts as early as 2019, long before such initiatives became mainstream.
CEO Jonathan Lewis emphasized that the eCSOV represents more than technological achievement—it reflects the company’s deep-rooted values and commitment to doing the right thing, even when difficult.
The project features a collaboration of industry-leading technology providers, including Kongsberg for dynamic positioning and propulsion systems, Corvus Energy for battery technology, and Wärtsilä for engine and propulsion integration.
