Climate Change: Tinubu has demonstrated political will – Onuigbo

A climate change advocate, Chief Sam Onuigbo has said President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated political will to ensure that Nigeria seamlessly transited to clean energy.

Onuigbo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

Onuigbo, a former House of Representatives member said by signing the Electricity Act and leading Nigeria’s delegation to COP28, Tinubu has shown his readiness to promote ‘green Nigeria.

”Nigeria as a nation has resolved that it will transit to clean energy. President Tinubu is doing all it takes to achieve this goal.

“Tinubu should remain on course in exercising leadership on climate change. He should ensure effective implementation of the Climate Change Act and the Electricity Act,’’ he said.

NAN reports that Onuigbo who sponsored the Climate Change Act, was recently inducted into Business Insider Global Leaders on Climate Change.

He urged other African leaders to increase access to clean energy in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The former lawmaker said that it was unfortunate that no fewer than 970 million Africans lacked access to renewable energy.

He said given Africa’s vulnerability to impacts of climate change, it was important that African leaders accelerated investment in clean energy rather than wait for advanced countries to ‘help the continent’.

Onuigbo, however, said African countries have made progress in their efforts to save the continent from the effects of climate change.

“I believe very strongly that we are on the part that is right,’’he said.

He said Africa was blessed with huge green energy resources, and urged African leaders to tap into those resources to develop the continent’s green energy base.

According to him, focusing so much on fossil energy would mean that in the future African nations would have no market for their fossil fuel because their customers must have migrated to green energy.
