The Anambra State Police Command has warned residents to take precautions against flooding, particularly urging parents, guardians and caregivers to ensure the safety of schoolchildren amid persistent rainfall across parts of the state.
The warning followed the death of a pupil, Success Ezenwafor, who was swept away by floodwaters in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area, while on his way to school.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued the alert in a statement on Wednesday, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid exposing children to flood-prone areas.
Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, was travelling in a school bus last Tuesday when the vehicle was trapped and overturned by floodwaters.
Nine other occupants, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued by police operatives and residents and taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.
Ezenwafor was swept away during the incident and remained missing until his remains were recovered the following morning.
