The Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) will take place in Addis Ababa from September 8 to 10, 2025, hosted by the government of Ethiopia and the African Union.
The high-profile event, seen as Africa’s version of COP, will bring together more than 45 Heads of State to showcase African-led climate solutions and press for fair global financing to address the escalating climate crisis.
Africa remains one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions, facing devastating consequences from rising temperatures.
With 2024 recorded as the hottest year in history and 2025 already on track to surpass it, the urgency surrounding this year’s summit is greater than ever.
The theme, “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development,” reflects the continent’s determination to shape a new narrative that emphasizes resilience, innovation, and green growth.
The summit builds on the momentum of the inaugural meeting held in Nairobi in 2023, which concluded with the Nairobi Declaration, a landmark 11-point call to action uniting Africa’s voice in climate negotiations.
Over the past two years, countries have sought to translate the declaration into concrete policies and outcomes, though challenges persist.
ACS2 will assess the progress made, consolidate commitments, and push for the implementation of practical solutions that transform vulnerabilities into opportunities for sustainable development.
The upcoming gathering is expected to highlight key African-led initiatives, such as the expansion of renewable energy projects, the adoption of climate-smart agriculture, and the development of innovative green technologies.
However, the central issue remains financing.
African nations are currently spending up to 5 percent of their GDP to manage climate impacts despite contributing minimally to global emissions.
The multi-trillion-dollar funding gap in climate finance continues to leave African countries at a disadvantage in implementing adaptation and mitigation strategies.
ACS2 aims to reposition Africa not merely as a victim of climate change but as a solution-driven continent capable of leading the global transition to a sustainable future.
Leaders are expected to press for fairer financial mechanisms, greater international support, and recognition that investing in Africa’s resilience is synonymous with securing the planet’s future.
The Nairobi Declaration set the stage by framing Africa’s unified climate vision, but Addis Ababa is where leaders intend to move from declarations to delivery.
The Addis Ambition, as it is being described, will serve as a rallying point for demanding equitable financing, fostering innovation, and driving homegrown solutions that align with both Africa’s development goals and global climate commitments.
As the world prepares for COP30 in Belém, Brazil later this year, the Africa Climate Summit will serve as a defining moment for the continent to strengthen its position, assert its priorities, and influence the global climate agenda.
The stakes could not be higher, and Addis Ababa is set to become the stage where Africa seeks to transform its climate vulnerabilities into a platform for leadership, resilience, and sustainable growth.
