VIDEO: Abuja Estate Devastated by Torrential Rain, Leaves 116 Houses Flooded, Residents Homeless

In a shocking turn of events, Trademore Estate, located along Airport Road in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, was completely submerged by floodwaters on Friday after enduring hours of relentless heavy rain.

Reports indicate that at least 116 houses were severely affected, leaving numerous residents homeless and causing significant damage to the community.

The once peaceful and prosperous neighborhood transformed into a scene of devastation as the floodwaters engulfed the residential area.

Witnesses described the torrential rain as relentless, causing the nearby water channel to overflow and inundate the estate. The calamitous event highlighted infractions on the water channel, which were found to be a contributing factor to the disaster.

Residents of Trademore Estate were caught off guard as the rapidly rising waters flooded their homes, forcing many to seek refuge on higher ground or evacuate the area altogether. The floodwaters wreaked havoc on the community, submerging streets, damaging vehicles, and destroying personal belongings.

Speaking on the dire situation, Mr. Ahmed Suleiman, a resident of Trademore Estate, expressed his distress, saying, “We never expected such a catastrophic event to occur in our community. Our homes are now submerged, and we have lost everything. We appeal to the government to expedite the necessary actions to restore normalcy and prevent this from happening again.”

The devastating flood serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive urban planning and effective infrastructure management to mitigate the risks associated with extreme weather events.

As climate change continues to manifest in unpredictable and severe weather patterns, it becomes imperative for local authorities and residents alike to prioritize disaster preparedness and ensure the safety and resilience of communities.

As the residents of Trademore Estate face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives, the incident serves as a clarion call for concerted efforts in bolstering flood prevention measures and implementing sustainable urban development strategies to safeguard vulnerable areas from future disasters.
