Scent leaf is an aromatic plant that are widespread across tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It is a perennial homegrown plant that are native to Ghana, Cameron, Nigeria, Southern Asia and Madagascar. They are commonly grown for spice in dishes and for their antifungal, antibacterial, larvicidal actions that aid in the prevention and treatment of different diseases.
They are rich in bioactive compounds such as Iron, Vitamin A, Tannins, Phenols, Calcium etc. These compounds are necessary for general growth development. Scent leaf contains Vitamin A that improve eye health. It helps to protect the eye from eye problems like xerophthalmia, night blindness etc.
Scent leaf contains larvicidal compounds like Camphor, Cineole, Limonene which destroys and repel insects like mosquitoes, houseflies thereby reducing the risk of getting malaria. Chloroform can be extracted from the leaf of a scent leaf and used in the prevention of range of diseases like Candida , microsporeum gypsum, penicillin notatum as well as skin infections. This is due to their powerful antifungal and antibacterial properties. The leaf is decocted and used to treat menstrual ache, fever, ear and stomach aches.
Scent leaf is useful in the ease of bloat and aids digestion of food. It calms and soothes the stomach and prevents heartburn.
