Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned two new recycling hubs in Jigawa and Kaduna states to improve waste management, create livelihoods and promote environmental sustainability in Northern Nigeria.
The hubs were inaugurated earlier in July at Gidan Hakimi in Shuwarin Local Government Area of Jigawa State and Asharami Retail Station in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State, according to the Foundation.
The Foundation said the facilities are its 21st and 22nd Sahara Go Recycling Hubs nationwide and the second and third established in Northern Nigeria.
According to Sahara Group Foundation, the Jigawa hub was delivered in partnership with the King’s Council, Shuwarin, while the Kaduna hub was developed in collaboration with Asharami Synergy.
Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the hubs demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment to expanding practical sustainability solutions through partnerships with local institutions.
Menakaya stated, “By partnering with institutions and sister companies that understand local needs and realities, we are building a recycling ecosystem that communities can own, sustain, and benefit from over the long term.”
Speaking at the inauguration in Jigawa, Alhaji Bashir Abdullahi, Sarkin Gabas and Hakimin Shuwarin, said the recycling hub would provide residents with an organised waste management system while creating economic opportunities for women and young people.
At the Kaduna event, Asharami Retail Station Manager, Aliyu Abdullahi Mabai, said hosting the recycling hub would provide customers and neighbouring communities with an accessible means of recycling while reinforcing the company’s environmental responsibility.
NatureNews notes that recycling reduces waste sent to landfills, lowers pollution, conserves natural resources and supports circular economy initiatives that generate employment and improve community sanitation.
The Foundation disclosed that Sahara Go Recycling has recycled more than 1,000 tonnes of waste materials, supported over 2,000 livelihoods nationwide and plans to establish another recycling hub in Kano State in the coming weeks.
