Director-General/CEO of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to tackling methane emissions and other short-lived climate pollutants.
Dr. Majekodunmi disclosed this at a high-level reception hosted by His Majesty King Charles III at St James’s Palace in London on Wednesday.
The reception focused on accelerating global solutions to methane and non-carbon dioxide pollutants, bringing together climate leaders, policymakers and stakeholders from across the world to strengthen cooperation on reducing emissions that significantly contribute to global warming.
Speaking after the event, Dr. Majekodunmi described the gathering as a significant opportunity to advance international collaboration on climate action and to showcase Nigeria’s commitment to reducing methane emissions
The DG also informed His Majesty of Nigeria’s pleasure in signing up to the Methane Declaration announced at the event, reiterating the country’s determination to strengthen methane reduction efforts as part of broader climate mitigation strategies.
She noted that her participation was particularly significant given her dual role as Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change and Nigeria’s Global Methane Champion.
The climate chief said the event highlighted the increasing global momentum behind methane action and underscored the importance of practical and near-term solutions in addressing climate change.
She explained that reducing methane emissions remains one of the fastest and most effective ways to slow global warming, improve air quality and support sustainable development objectives.
Dr. Majekodunmi further observed that the reception demonstrated the growing recognition among world leaders of the need to accelerate action on methane and other short-lived climate pollutants through partnerships, innovation and policy commitments.
She described the occasion as both memorable and humbling, stressing that it was a proud moment to represent Nigeria on the international stage while contributing to discussions aimed at advancing effective climate solutions.
The Director-General added that Nigeria remains committed to working with global partners to implement practical methane reduction measures and strengthen efforts to address the climate crisis for the benefit of present and future generations.
