Nigeria, china explore new partnerships in renewable energy, agriculture

By Faridat Salifu

Nigeria and China have pledged to deepen cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture, the digital economy and other emerging sectors as both countries mark 55 years of diplomatic relations.

The commitment was announced during a reception in Lagos celebrating the Chinese New Year and the 55th anniversary of China–Nigeria diplomatic relations.

Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria–China Relations, Jaafaru Yakubu, said the partnership, established in 1971, has evolved into a strategic relationship delivering infrastructure, trade, and development benefits across Nigeria.

He highlighted achievements such as rail, road, and power projects, as well as growth in manufacturing and digital innovation.

Yakubu said the National Assembly remains committed to strengthening legislative cooperation and ensuring bilateral partnerships are transparent, sustainable, and beneficial to Nigerians.

He identified opportunities for expanded collaboration in renewable energy, healthcare, science and technology, agriculture, and human capital development, noting that such engagement would strengthen South–South cooperation and contribute to global development efforts.

Speaking at the event, Consul General of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, said 2025 saw significant milestones in China–Nigeria relations, including increased high-level diplomatic exchanges and expanded economic cooperation.

Yuqing cited major bilateral projects such as the Abuja Greater Water Supply Project, which improved water access for around three million people, and enhancements at the Lekki Deep Sea Port.

She also noted that passenger and freight traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan railway and Lagos Light Rail reached new highs, improving mobility and cargo transport while supporting economic activity.

Officials said the renewed focus on renewable energy, agriculture, and digital innovation aims to leverage China’s technological expertise to accelerate Nigeria’s economic transformation.
