LAWMA begins bulk waste evacuation along Lagos-Badagry expressway

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has launched a large-scale bulk waste evacuation exercise at Alaba Rago on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as part of efforts to restore environmental cleanliness and protect public health along the busy corridor.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency’s operations team deployed bulk waste carriers, loaders and support personnel to remove refuse from identified illegal dump sites in the area.
He said the intervention is part of a structured corridor-cleaning strategy aimed at tackling persistent indiscriminate dumping and environmental degradation.
Gbadegesin disclosed that the clean-up will extend to Okokomaiko and the median near Lagos State University (LASU), locations prioritised due to heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well as recurring sanitation challenges.
The operation will subsequently move from Agric Bus Stop toward Mile 2 to ensure comprehensive restoration of environmental standards across the Lagos-Badagry Expressway axis.
Gbadegesin stressed that the exercise is not a one-time action but part of a sustained sanitation framework that includes continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement with traders and residents, intensified public sensitisation and strict enforcement measures to prevent a recurrence.
The LAWMA chief reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner Lagos and urged residents, traders and motorists to refrain from dumping refuse indiscriminately, particularly along highways and medians.
He noted that surveillance and enforcement efforts would be strengthened to safeguard public health and sustain cleanliness in the area.
