NESREA seals Oyo factory over environmental violations

By Abbas Nazil

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency has sealed off Bond Chemicals Industries Limited in Oyo State over violations of environmental regulations following a public complaint.

The enforcement action was taken after reports and independent verification confirmed that the facility was discharging untreated industrial effluent into the environment.

According to the agency, the illegal discharge posed risks to public health and the surrounding ecosystem, prompting immediate regulatory intervention.

A compliance inspection conducted on February 18, 2026 by officials from the agency’s South West Zonal Office revealed that the facility lacked a functional effluent treatment plant.

Inspectors also discovered that untreated wastewater with offensive odour was being released directly into the environment, in clear violation of national environmental standards.

Following the inspection, the company was formally notified and directed to take corrective measures to address the environmental infractions.

These directives included installing and operating an appropriate effluent treatment system in line with regulatory requirements, as well as obtaining the necessary environmental permits.

However, a subsequent follow-up inspection showed that the company failed to comply with the agency’s instructions.

As a result, NESREA exercised its statutory authority to seal the facility in order to halt further environmental damage and protect nearby communities.

The Director General of the agency, Innocent Barikor, reiterated the importance of strict compliance with environmental laws by all industrial operators.

He emphasised that companies are required to install and properly maintain pollution control equipment to prevent environmental degradation.

He further warned that the agency would continue to strengthen its monitoring and enforcement efforts across the country.

According to him, NESREA will not hesitate to impose sanctions on any organisation found violating environmental regulations.

The agency stated that the affected facility will remain shut until it fully complies with all directives and meets the required environmental standards.

Authorities also confirmed that further investigations and compliance monitoring are ongoing to ensure adherence to regulations and prevent future violations.
