Ghana faces looming tomato shortage after Burkina Faso bans exports

By Faridat Salifu

Ghana is bracing for a potential tomato shortage after the Burkina Faso government indefinitely banned the export of the commodity, a move aimed at securing supplies for its national processing units.

The letter signed recently by Burkina Faso Trades and Agriculture ministers announced the ban and suspended the issuance of Special Export Authorisations (ASE). The letter gave traders holding valid export permits two weeks to complete shipments, warning that permits would become invalid after that period and that violators would face sanctions.

The communiqué also instructed authorities, including border and security agencies, to enforce compliance and noted that any seized tomatoes would be returned to local processing plants operating under the popular shareholding scheme.

The effects of the ban are already being felt in Ghana’s markets. Tomato vendors at the Racecourse Market in Kumasi reported reduced availability and warned of price spikes if the situation persists.

Vendors are using the moment to call on the Ghanaian government to strengthen the local tomato industry by improving irrigation systems and investing in processing facilities, highlighting the sector’s long-standing reliance on imports from neighbouring Burkina Faso, especially during lean seasons.

Northern Ghana, which serves as the main corridor for cross-border produce, is expected to experience the tightest supply pressure in the coming weeks, with possible ripple effects on national market prices.

Experts say the ban underscores the fragility of Ghana’s tomato supply chain and reinforces the urgent need for domestic production and processing capacity to reduce dependency on imports.
