MSC, Nigerdock partner on $1bn Snake Island terminal port expansion

Global shipping company, MSC has secured a 45-year concession to develop and operate a new container terminal at Snake Island in Lagos, in a deal estimated at $1 billion, underscoring rising private sector investment in Nigeria’s blue economy.

The agreement will see MSC partner with Nigerdock to expand port capacity and improve logistics efficiency within Nigeria’s busiest maritime hub.

The project is expected to reduce pressure on existing Lagos ports, where congestion and delays have continued to disrupt trade and increase operational costs.

Industry stakeholders say the investment highlights a shift towards private sector-led expansion in Nigeria’s port system, as authorities look to boost efficiency and competitiveness.

The new terminal is projected to increase cargo throughput, shorten vessel waiting time and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional maritime hub in West Africa.

Beyond trade, the development is expected to generate jobs and stimulate economic activity across transport, warehousing and other marine-related services.

Experts, however, note that the success of the project will depend on complementary reforms, including streamlined customs processes and improved regulatory oversight.

The concession marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to unlock the full potential of its blue economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues.
