NESREA, CSE review Nigeria’s environmental audit guidelines

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) had successfully review and update the environmental audit guidelines.

The revised guidelines aim to ensure a robust and effective environmental auditing process, driving compliance and sustainability in Nigeria.

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday at NESREA’s Abuja offices, aim to align rules with best practices and the realities of the modern environment.

Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor expressed his gratitude to CSE for their support.

He emphasized that the revised document would significantly enhance the auditing process for the regulated community.

He said: “The updated guidelines will ensure a more robust and effective environmental auditing process, driving compliance and sustainability in Nigeria.

Dr. Barikor explained that the review was necessary to refine and enhance the guidelines, accommodating sector growth and emerging trends.

He stressed the importance of producing comprehensive and practical guidelines to improve compliance monitoring and auditing of facilities.

Similarly, Mr. Nitvit Kumar Yadav, Director of Industry and Pollution Programme at CSE, highlighted the critical role of environmental audits in assessing facilities’ compliance with environmental laws and generating data for policy decisions.

He underscored the need for dynamic guidelines that reflect the evolving environmental landscape.

The successful collaboration between NESREA and CSE demonstrates their commitment to enhancing environmental governance and promoting sustainability in Nigeria.
