NEMA conducts flood response simulation in Kano

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted a full-scale flood response simulation in Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s disaster preparedness ahead of anticipated flooding in 2025.
The exercise, held last Saturday, was designed to test emergency response plans and coordination mechanisms in the event of dam-induced flooding from Tiga, Challawa, and Bagauda Dams.
It follows flood risk predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), identifying Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara as high-risk states.
NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar, highlighted the importance of readiness in preventing loss of life during disasters.
She said the recent devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, reinforces the urgency of proactive planning and collaboration, emphasizing, “Preparedness saves lives.”
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building resilience against environmental and climate-related challenges.
He stressed the need for local communities to respond promptly and effectively when disasters occur.
The governor also pointed to ongoing efforts including drainage clearance, infrastructure upgrades, and public awareness campaigns.
The exercise featured simulated rescue missions, aid distribution, and community mobilization. It aimed to identify gaps in current systems and improve synergy among emergency responders.
The event reaffirmed the need for collective responsibility in mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
