The Niger Delta Development Commission on Monday in Port Harcourt deployed a new fire truck to improve emergency response and strengthen fire disaster management across communities in the Niger Delta region.
The commission said the deployment was part of efforts to boost disaster preparedness and protect lives, property and critical infrastructure from fire outbreaks in the oil-producing region.
Managing Director of the NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku, stated that the fire truck would enhance rapid emergency response and support safer communities across the Niger Delta.
Ogbuku noted that growing urbanisation, industrial activities and environmental risks in the region have increased the need for stronger disaster management infrastructure and emergency response systems.
The commission explained that the vehicle would support collaboration with fire service agencies and other emergency response institutions operating within the region.
It added that effective emergency response systems remain critical in environmentally sensitive areas such as the Niger Delta, where oil facilities, markets and densely populated communities are vulnerable to fire incidents.
Environmental stakeholders have repeatedly warned that weak emergency preparedness can worsen the environmental and economic impact of industrial fires and oil-related disasters in the region.
The deployment comes amid increasing calls for greater investment in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience infrastructure across Nigeria’s coastal and oil-producing communities.
