NAFDAC Reiterates Warning Against Harmful Bread Additives

By Grace Ademulegun

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its battle against the use of dangerous substances in bread production across Nigeria.

The agency, which says such substances include saccharin and bromate, recently reiterated its stern warning to bakeries against the use of such substances, underscoring the severe health risks posed by these additives.

Speaking during a News Forum, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to protecting public health through rigorous post-market surveillance.

“Our post-marketing surveillance plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety,” Prof. Adeyeye stated, adding, “We routinely inspect products in the market, often acting on complaints received through our reform office.”

Beyond bread, NAFDAC is also extending its regulatory crackdown to water production facilities, shutting down operations that fail to meet hygiene and quality standards.

“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate ensures that products in the market comply with the approved formulas submitted during registration,” she explained.

The DG, however, expressed dismay over the findings that some manufacturers alter their formulas post-registration, making continuous monitoring essential to maintain safety standards.

Adeyeye emphasized the critical role of market control in ensuring compliance and protecting consumers from harmful practices.

She urged producers to adhere strictly to approved standards to avoid sanctions.
