Lions club takes anti-plastic campaign to Ikorodu markets

The Lions Clubs International on Monday carried its anti-plastic pollution campaign to markets in Ikorodu to promote environmental sanitation and discourage indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste among traders and residents.
According to organisers of the campaign, the awareness drive targeted market communities with sensitisation activities focused on the environmental and public health impacts of plastic pollution.
The campaign was conducted by members of Lions Clubs in the district as part of efforts to encourage behavioural change in waste disposal practices and improve environmental cleanliness in densely populated commercial areas.
Officials of the organisation explained that improper disposal of plastic waste contributes to blocked drainage channels, flooding and pollution in urban communities across Lagos State.
The organisers also noted that market environments generate significant volumes of single-use plastics, making waste management awareness critical to reducing environmental degradation.
According to the report, traders and residents were educated on responsible waste disposal practices and the importance of reducing plastic use in everyday commercial activities.
Environmental stakeholders have repeatedly warned that plastic pollution remains a major environmental challenge in Nigeria, particularly in urban centres where poor waste management contributes to flooding and ecosystem contamination.
The Lagos State Government has continued to advocate improved waste management and environmental sustainability measures to address growing pollution concerns linked to rapid urbanisation.
The campaign aligns with broader environmental efforts aimed at reducing plastic pollution and strengthening community participation in waste management and environmental protection.
For NatureNews, the initiative highlights the increasing role of community-based environmental campaigns in addressing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable urban sanitation practices across Nigeria.
