Katsina govt, IsDB deepen partnership on agricultural value-chain

Katsina State is repositioning its agriculture strategy toward value-chain development, combining public investment with international partnerships to expand production, reduce losses, and improve rural incomes.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda said the state is actively deploying its own resources alongside external support to strengthen agricultural systems and scale impact across farming communities.

He made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Islamic Development Bank led by Dr. Masuda Saidova on a working visit to the state.

Radda said the administration is prioritising agriculture not only as a source of food production but as a key driver of jobs, rural development, and economic stability.

He noted that the state is focusing on improving post-harvest systems through better storage facilities and processing capacity to ensure farmers retain more value from their produce.

The governor said rising costs of inputs such as fertiliser remain a challenge, adding that government subsidies are being used to reduce the burden on farmers and sustain productivity levels.

He also highlighted investments in agricultural extension services, with more than 800 trained personnel deployed across communities to improve farming practices and productivity.

On irrigation, he said Katsina is expanding year-round farming through tube well construction and solar-powered irrigation systems aimed at reducing dependence on seasonal rainfall.

The administration is also supporting livestock programmes targeting women and rural households, while mechanised farming initiatives are being scaled up to improve efficiency across the sector.

Radda said strengthening agriculture is central to addressing unemployment and insecurity, arguing that youth engagement in farming can create sustainable livelihoods and reduce social pressures.

The Islamic Development Bank delegation, after inspecting agricultural projects in the state, commended the initiatives and pledged continued collaboration to support large-scale agricultural hubs and improve food production systems.
