Kano govt prepares farmland for dry season farming

By Faridat Salifu

The Kano State government has embarked on the desilting of 22 dams in an attempt to enhance agricultural productivity and support dry season farming.

The move aimed at removing accumulated silt, sediment, and other deposits from the dams towards free flow of water particularly for irrigation farming.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, disclosed this on Tuesday in Kano.

According to him, the initiative is not only set to improve water storage and management but also to promote environmental sustainability.

He emphasized that the desilting efforts are complemented by the massive clearance of 1,299 hectares of cultivable land in Dansoshiya forest saying, “We aim to boost irrigation farming in Kano and contribute to the country’s agricultural output.”

He said desilting of the dams is expected to significantly enhance agricultural productivity, support farmers’ livelihoods, and promote sustainable water management practices.

In a related development, the state government has embarked on the construction of rural roads to facilitate the transportation of farm produce.

“Good roads are essential for evacuating harvested crops to various destinations, including homes and markets,” Mahmoud added.

He stressed that in further support of agriculture, the Kano State government has invested N6.2 billion in fertilizers, distributing 52 trucks worth N1.2 billion to farmers across the 44 local government areas, free of charge.

An additional 180 trucks of fertilizers, valued at N5 billion, have been procured and are being offered to farmers at a 50 percent discounted rate.

These efforts not only aim to boost agricultural production but also have significant environmental benefits. By desilting dams, the state is improving water quality and storage capacity, which helps maintain local ecosystems.

Clearing cultivable land in a sustainable manner ensures that agriculture does not encroach on vital forest areas, preserving biodiversity and promoting environmental health.

The combined approach of enhancing agricultural infrastructure, providing necessary inputs to farmers, and implementing environmentally friendly practices underscores Kano State’s commitment to both agricultural and environmental sustainability.
