FG to deploy tech innovation to boost conservation efforts

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Lawal, has urged the adoption of advanced technologies and innovative methods to boost conservation efforts in Nigeria.

He made the call during the 2025 World Ranger Day celebration held on Tuesday in Abuja, organized by the National Park Service under the theme “Rangers, Powering Transformative Conservation.”

Lawal highlighted the use of drone surveillance, tracking software, aerial satellites, and other IT-based tools as crucial to enhancing ranger efficiency.

He praised the National Park Service’s efforts, led by Conservator-General Dr. Ibrahim Goni, in deploying helicopters, drones, SMART technology, and cyber trackers to protect Nigeria’s national parks.

Though World Ranger Day is globally observed on July 31, the event was delayed in Nigeria due to unforeseen circumstances.

The day honors rangers who have sacrificed their lives or been injured protecting natural resources and emphasizes their vital role in biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Goni described rangers as “unsung heroes,” applauding their dedication under challenging conditions to safeguard Nigeria’s environment and cultural heritage.

He stressed that their resilience inspires ongoing conservation efforts.

In a goodwill message, Chris Galliers, President of the International Ranger Federation (IRF), represented by Deputy Conservator Dikko Bala, called for stronger partnerships involving governments, NGOs, donor agencies, and media to support ranger welfare and advocacy.

Rep. Mike Etaba, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, pledged legislative support to enhance wildlife conservation and back the National Park Service’s initiatives.

The event featured award presentations to outstanding rangers and a symbolic release of birds, celebrating the commitment of those protecting Nigeria’s biodiversity.
