Kangimi dam cracks raise fears of major flood disaster

By Abbas Nazil

Concerns are mounting over the structural condition of Kangimi Dam in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following reports of significant cracks and warnings that a possible failure of the facility could expose communities in Kaduna, Niger State, the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas to severe flooding.

The warning comes amid the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s forecast that several states, including Kaduna, face heightened flood risks, increasing calls for urgent government intervention to assess and address vulnerabilities around the dam.

African Climate Reporters, during a recent visit to the Kangimi Dam site, reportedly observed cracks on the structure, raising concerns about its integrity and the safety of communities located downstream.

Residents of Kangimi community are said to be increasingly worried about the condition of the dam, with fears that a structural failure during the peak of the rainy season could result in widespread destruction of lives, homes, farmland and other infrastructure.

The report described the situation as requiring urgent attention, warning that the consequences of a major dam failure could extend beyond Kaduna State because of the volume of water involved and the surrounding terrain.

It further raised concerns about possible impacts on parts of Niger State and the FCT, including Abuja, although the scale and geographical extent of any potential flooding would require proper technical assessment by relevant authorities.

The development has prompted calls for immediate structural inspection, emergency reinforcement and comprehensive risk assessment of the dam before rainfall intensifies further.

The report urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct relevant federal authorities to undertake an emergency assessment of Kangimi Dam and provide necessary support to prevent a possible disaster.

It also appealed to Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani to work with the Federal Government and relevant emergency management agencies to protect communities considered vulnerable to flooding and take appropriate preventive measures.

Beyond repairs, the report called for improved preparedness, including the identification of at-risk communities, development of evacuation plans and increased coordination among government agencies, traditional institutions, local communities and emergency responders.

It stressed that preventive action would be less costly than responding to a major flood disaster after lives and property had already been lost.

The concerns surrounding Kangimi Dam also highlight the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of critical water infrastructure, particularly as climate change contributes to increasingly unpredictable rainfall patterns and extreme weather events.

While claims about the possible scale of a Kangimi Dam failure require verification through an independent engineering and hydrological assessment, the reported cracks warrant prompt investigation by competent authorities.

For communities living downstream and around the dam, timely technical assessment, transparent communication and emergency preparedness could help reduce potential risks and ensure that any identified structural weaknesses are addressed before they develop into a wider humanitarian and environmental crisis.
