Indonesia’s biofuel push tightens global palm oil supply

Indonesia’s move to increase the use of palm oil-based biodiesel is tightening global vegetable oil supplies, as higher domestic demand coincides with climate-related production risks in major palm oil-producing countries.
The world’s largest palm oil producer began implementing a 50 per cent biodiesel blending mandate, known as B50, in July 2026, up from B40, directing more palm oil into domestic fuel production and reducing the volume available for export.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) projects Indonesia’s industrial palm oil consumption will rise 16 per cent to 17.4 million tonnes in the 2026-27 marketing year, while exports are expected to fall to 23.1 million tonnes.
The supply pressure is being compounded by weather concerns, with El Niño conditions expected to bring prolonged dry weather to major producing regions including Sumatra and Kalimantan.
FAS has consequently reduced Indonesia’s 2026-27 palm oil production forecast to 47.2 million tonnes from 48 million tonnes.
Malaysia, the world’s second-largest palm oil producer, is facing similar pressures, with production forecast at 19.7 million tonnes, down from 20 million tonnes in the previous year.
Malaysia also increased its biodiesel blending requirement to B15 from B10 in June, a move expected to increase domestic palm oil consumption by about 330,000 tonnes.
The combination of higher biofuel demand and weaker production prospects is already being reflected in prices, with nearby palm oil futures rising 19 per cent from the beginning of 2026 to Aug. 14.
The tightening palm oil market is also supporting competing vegetable oils such as canola, as buyers and traders respond to changing supplies across the global vegetable oil market.
Errol Anderson, author of Errol’s Commodity Wire, said the strength in palm oil was contributing to the rally in canola, with November canola futures breaking above $805 per tonne earlier in August and testing $820 on Aug. 14.
The developments highlight how energy policies in major agricultural economies can have effects far beyond fuel markets, influencing food and vegetable oil prices while climate variability adds another layer of uncertainty to global supply.
