Environmental Catastrophe Unfolds in Okrika as Oil Spillage Triggers Deadly Explosion, Kills 2 Fishermen

Residents of the Okrika Local Government Area in Rivers State find themselves engulfed in an unprecedented environmental crisis following an oil spillage that stemmed from a catastrophic explosion at a fuel depot located in the Okari Jetty area.

This calamitous incident has not only claimed the lives of two fishermen but has also dealt a devastating blow to the aquatic ecosystem of the region, prompting urgent calls for environmental investigation, cleanup, and prevention measures.

According to a detailed eyewitness account, the recent tragic explosion was a result of the mishandling of a hose utilized for unloading Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at a depot owned by a Port Harcourt refining company. The negligence in handling the hose led to a spill.

The explosion itself occurred later that evening when two unsuspecting fishermen, oblivious to the impending danger, embarked on a fishing expedition with lanterns. The ignition was inadvertently sparked by the light emitted from their lanterns.

The explosion was accompanied by a deafening blast and a fierce inferno that not only claimed the lives of the two fishermen but also left a wake of destruction in its path.

The eyewitness’s account paints a grim picture, recounting that the intense fire even engulfed and consumed the fishermen’s boat, leaving behind a trail of devastation and despair.

In the wake of this tragic event, an unusual and unsettling phenomenon came to light the next morning. Local residents discovered a distressing abundance of lifeless fish adrift on the surface of the river.

Seizing upon this unexpected and grim windfall, some individuals began to collect significant quantities of these deceased fish, subsequently drying them for sale.

Initial reports initially suggested a significantly higher death toll, with as many as 16 lives lost.

However, Akuro Tobin, the Chairman of the Okrika Local Government Area, has since confirmed that the true toll stands at four lives lost.

Tobin expressed his profound sorrow and dismay over the incident, attributing it to unauthorized attempts at oil theft—a perilous and illegal activity that the government had vehemently cautioned against.

He lamented the loss of life and implored individuals to refrain from engaging in such hazardous activities.

As the aftermath continues to unfold, grave environmental concerns have arisen.

Fyneface Dumnamene, an impassioned environmental rights advocate and the Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocate Centre, has vehemently called for a comprehensive investigation into the catastrophe.

Dumnamene underscores the broader implications of the spillage, highlighting the potential extensive damage inflicted upon the local aquatic ecosystem and the profound disruption caused to the livelihoods of the region’s fishermen and farmers.

He emphasizes the urgent need for accountable parties, including the implicated refining company and relevant authorities, to take immediate action to facilitate environmental cleanup and prevent future disasters of this magnitude.
