Egypt, FAO strengthen cooperation on climate adaptation projects
By Abbas Nazil
Egypt is deepening cooperation with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to explore new projects and expand focus on climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem protection.
The North African nation’s Acting Minister of Environment, Manal Awad, has held discussions with FAO’s officials for that purpose.
The meeting highlighted Egypt’s ongoing initiatives in partnership with FAO, including the sustainable management of agricultural ecosystems in the New Valley oases and support for development efforts in Al-Farafra.
Awad emphasized cooperation with other ministries to modernize irrigation and farming practices, as well as to develop crop varieties that are resilient to climate change.
The discussions also addressed strengthening climate resilience in coastal and delta governorates through ecosystem restoration programs funded by the Green Climate Fund.
Regional initiatives were considered, including sustainable fisheries management in the Red Sea and the SCALA program, which is designed to enhance climate ambition in land use and agriculture.
The meeting explored expanding organic fertilizer production through large-scale biogas units at livestock farms, aiming to improve the competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural exports according to European standards.
Cooperation on sustainable solutions for managing stray dog populations without harming local ecosystems was also discussed during the talks.
Awad stated that Egypt seeks FAO support to implement its national climate change strategy and nationally determined contributions, particularly in agriculture and irrigation sectors.
She added that the partnership aims to promote climate-smart agriculture, increase the use of renewable energy, and access new international financing, including loss and damage funds.
FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative Abdulhakim Elwaer highlighted the importance of Egypt’s partnership in advancing food security and developing resilient food systems capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change.
Elwaer praised Egypt’s leadership role in the region and its long-standing cooperation with the FAO, noting that the collaboration is critical for addressing both national and regional climate and agricultural challenges.
The discussions reaffirmed both parties’ commitment to implementing sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing environmental protection, and promoting climate-resilient initiatives across Egypt.
The meeting signals a continued effort to align Egypt’s agricultural and environmental policies with global sustainability goals while leveraging FAO expertise and funding opportunities to strengthen climate adaptation and resilience measures nationwide.
