Eco-Cyclers sensitises Enugu traders on beating plastic pollution

By Dauda Abbas

Eco-Cyclers, a for-profit social enterprise located in Enugu State, Nigeria, held a one-day sensitization outreach and awareness event on June 10, in commemoration of World Environment Day 2023.

Ogechi Nwonye, the head of Eco-Cyclers, described the event as “a very successful outreach” that attracted over 35 volunteers.

“One key thing that stood out was the traders’ intentionality in listening to us and their willingness to help curb the waste challenge facing the market. They mentioned challenges such as limited public bins and waste bags,” she said.

Nwonye added, “The traders commended our efforts and shared their difficulties in finding easily accessible drop-off recycling bins for waste segregation and collection. We had brief meetings with their market leaders to discuss solutions to the issues raised and explore ways we could assist as a startup. Interestingly, they requested a follow-up visit for sustainability.

“We are doing everything we can to take climate action together through initiatives like the Clean & Green Up Campaigns in Enugu State. We reiterate that Enugu State must be clean and green for environmental sustainability.

“Additionally, we took the opportunity to call on our government to urgently partner with local recyclers and waste contractors, providing them with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities that can put Enugu State in the limelight.”
