Earth Treasures: Lapidolite

By Chisom Ibemere

Lapidolite is a lilac-gray or rose-colored member of the mica group of minerals which is named after the Greek words “lapis,” meaning stone, and “lithos,” meaning scale, due to its scaly appearance. It was discovered in 18th century and considered a form of lapidolite, another mica mineral.

Lapidolite occur in lithium-rich pegmatite deposits, alongside lithium-bearing minerals. It is the most abundant lithium-bearing mineral and is a secondary source of this metal.

It is the major source of the alkali metal rubidium. It is basically found in regions such as Brazil, United States, Madagascar, Russia, and Zimbabwe. It can also occur as an accessory mineral in some granites.

Lapidolite is primarily used as a gemstone, though it is comparatively less known and utilized compared to other gemstones. Its attractive lilac to pinkish-purple color makes it suitable for use in jewelry, especially as cabochons, beads, or inlay material. Lapidolite is also sometimes used as an ornamental stone and can be carved into various decorative objects.

Lapidolite ranges from pale lilac to pinkish-purple, often with a pearly or vitreous luster. It has a Monoclinic crystal system with a hardness of 2.5-4 on the Mohs scale and a Pearly to vitreous lustre. It is transparent to translucent with a perfect basal cleavage.

Lapidolite is not so valued when compared to other gemstones as a result of its relatively lower hardness and scarcity in the market. It is considered a semi-precious gemstone and is more commonly used in metaphysical and spiritual practices.

However, the value of lapidolite can still vary depending on its color, size, quality, and demand in the market.
