Dubai deploys AI to improve water quality testing

Dubai Municipality has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered water testing system to strengthen the detection of bacterial contamination in household and recreational water sources, a move aimed at improving public health protection and accelerating laboratory services.
The municipality said the upgraded system expands water quality testing to include storage tanks, household taps, swimming pools and non-bottled drinking water, while significantly reducing the time required to detect harmful bacteria such as Legionella and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
According to the municipality, the AI-enabled digital analysis platform delivers test results much faster than conventional laboratory methods, allowing authorities and facility operators to take prompt preventive measures when contamination is detected.
Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department, Mahmoud Ahmed, said the initiative reflects the municipality’s commitment to using advanced technologies to improve public health services.
“Dubai Municipality continues to leverage advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to deliver laboratory solutions that strengthen proactive protection against public health risks,” Ahmed said.
He added that the continuous upgrade of laboratory services is focused on accelerating testing processes, improving the accuracy of results and enabling quicker responses to potential health threats.
Ahmed noted that the initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision of enhancing its public health system and reinforcing its position as one of the world’s best cities to live in.
The municipality said the AI-powered testing programme forms part of its broader strategy to modernise laboratory services in line with international standards and best practices.
Officials said the enhanced system is expected to benefit residential communities, hotels, recreational centres and public facilities by improving water safety and boosting public confidence in water quality monitoring services.
