Bill to Amend NIMASA Act Scales First Reading Before Senate

A bill to amend the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Act 2006, has passed first reading on the floor of the Senate.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun made this known at the weekend, during an official visit to NIMASA operational offices in Lagos.
Eshinlokun emphasized the commitment of the 10th Senate in formulating policies that will ensure Nigerians enjoy the benefits of the blue economy.
The committee chairman asserted that a thorough assessment of the current maritime legal system was required to identify any deficiencies that would require ànother amendment when the new act becomes operational.
He also assured that the Upper Chamber, led by Sen. Godswill Akpabio, was committed to assisting the marine industry in accordance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision.
“Let me let you know that the NIMASA Act amendment bill passed first reading on the floor of the Senate today (Friday).
“I have to say on behalf of my colleagues that we are with you on this journey, and we will not hesitate to support your vision, in as much as it is geared towards enhancing the potential of the maritime sector for national growth and development.
“With the creation of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry by Mr. President, a message has been passed to all stakeholders that the maritime industry has a huge role to play in our nation building.
“We must align with the vision of the President, and we must support the government to achieve a better country for all Nigerians,” he said.
Eshinlokun also acknowledged NIMASA’s investment in acquisition and building of a strong maritime safety and security architecture, noting that such effort was a confirmation that the agency was conscious of its mandate and strategic status as a major contributor to the country’s sustainable development.
Also, Sen. Abdul Ningi, a committee member, praised NIMASA management for its achievements over the years.
“Over the years, I have visited this agency, and I must say that significant progress has been accomplished. You did a great job, he said.
Speaking, NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, highlighted the importance of the agency pointing out that a strong marine and blue economy, which includes all economic activity connected with the oceans and seas, will be able to support Nigeria’s annual budget.
Jamoh informed the Senate Committee that NIMASA has been unrelenting in its efforts to protect the nation’s waters and the Gulf of Guinea.
“As a country, it is now necessary to build on the recent developments in the field of waterway safety and security.
“Be confident that NIMASA is wisely using the money that have been allocated; this is demonstrated by our investment in infrastructure. We will continue in the direction President Bola Tinubu has pointed, with the creation of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry,” he stated.
