Alau Dam: Agency alerts Maiduguri residents on plans to release excess water

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has alerted residents of Maiduguri and environs on the release of excess water from Alau Dam.into River Ngadda.

The Director-General of the agency, Hajiya Yabawa Kolo,  have the warning on Friday in Maiduguri.

She urged those residing along the banks of the river to move to safer areas.

Kolo said the authorities of Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) managing the dam had communicated plan to release excess water into the river.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the river which has been filled to capacity for the past one month due to recent downpours recorded had claimed no fewer than 15 lives and destroyed many farmland.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno have deployed its personnel to strategic places along the river to stop children from going to take a swim.
