Aftermath of Ibadan Explosion: Gov Abiodun Goes Tough on Chemical Handlers in Ogun State

The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has directed every industry, individual or facility domiciled in the state, with the capacity to use and store chemicals to submit inventory of what was in their custody for monitoring, tracking, evaluation and waste management to the State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA).
The directive was handed down by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele at the just concluded second Chemical Handlers and User’s Workshop organised by OGEPA, with the theme, ”Circular Solutions For a Sustainable Economy,” held at the state capital, Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun assured participants at the workshop and residents of Ogun State that proactive measures has been put in place in the management of chemical wastes, towards an excellent environment towards excellent environmental governance, as well as a sustainable oriented economy.
He warned against abuse of chemical storage saying,” Henceforth, every industry, individual or facility domiciled in the state, with the capacity to use and store chemicals are expected to submit inventory for monitoring, tracking, evaluation and waste management to the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency.”
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, noted that the workshop was a pointer to the state government’s committment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, adding that it would address challenges posed by chemical wastes across the state.
Oresanya explained that chemical wastes remain in the air, waterways, and land, thereby exerting hazardous effects on the citizens.
