The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted interim approval for Enugu Air to commence domestic flight operations in partnership with XEJet, opening discussions about the environmental implications of fleet expansion and sustainable aviation practices.
The approval, announced on Monday, July 7, 2025, allows Enugu Air to operate using XEJet’s Embraer 170 aircraft under existing operational certifications, pending the completion of Enugu Air’s own Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
The Embraer 170 is a regional jet known for its relatively lower emissions compared to older aircraft models, offering a cleaner alternative that supports Nigeria’s environmental goals—including efforts to reduce aviation-related ozone-depleting substances and short-lived climate pollutants.
The NCAA noted that the approval aligns with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development’s 5-Point Agenda, which includes commitments to sustainable aviation and support for indigenous carriers.
As aviation emissions grow globally, attention is increasing on the role of aircraft maintenance, refrigerants, and fuel efficiency in protecting the ozone layer and reducing climate impacts.
While ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have largely been phased out in aviation, other compounds used in older air conditioning and fire suppression systems remain under international scrutiny, including under the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment.
By using newer-generation aircraft like the Embraer 170, Enugu Air is better positioned to comply with international climate-friendly standards for refrigerant management and energy efficiency.
During the official launch on July 7, attended by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Enugu Air confirmed it had begun operations with three Embraer 170 aircraft serving routes between Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos.
Governor Mbah announced plans to scale up operations to other Nigerian cities and regional hubs across Africa, raising the importance of integrating low-emission strategies from the outset.
Industry stakeholders say now is the time for new airlines like Enugu Air to adopt sustainable cooling technologies, fuel-efficient fleets, and climate-friendly maintenance practices.
Passengers currently access bookings through a redirect from Enugu Air’s website to XEJet’s platform, where tickets for the Enugu–Abuja and Enugu–Lagos routes are priced at ₦110,001.
The NCAA reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all new entrants to the aviation sector maintain high standards of safety, consumer protection, and environmental compliance.
