Spiro has been named the Most Sustainable Integrated Electric Vehicle Ecosystem Company of the Year at the West Africa Sustainability Summit 2026 in Lagos.
The recognition was presented during the summit’s awards ceremony on Friday, with Spiro Nigeria Country Head and Managing Director, Prasad Sane, receiving the award on behalf of the company.
The award recognises Spiro’s contribution to sustainable transportation in Nigeria through its electric mobility ecosystem, which combines electric motorcycles with battery-swapping infrastructure.
The company has expanded its operations across several Nigerian markets since entering the country, deploying electric motorcycles and developing a network of battery-swapping stations to support riders.
Spiro operates under its “Energy on the Move” model, which is designed to provide riders with access to electric transportation while reducing reliance on petrol-powered motorcycles.
The company said its electric motorcycles and battery-swapping system are helping riders reduce fuel and maintenance expenses while potentially improving their earnings and lowering carbon emissions from transportation.
Speaking after receiving the recognition, Sane said the award reflected the commitment of the company’s employees, riders, partners and customers towards developing cleaner transportation solutions.
He said sustainability remained central to Spiro’s operations and that the recognition would encourage the company to continue investing in innovation and expanding access to clean and affordable transportation.
Spiro’s business model centres on electric motorcycles supported by battery-swapping stations, allowing riders to replace depleted batteries instead of waiting for them to recharge.
The approach is intended to make electric motorcycles more practical for commercial and everyday users who require reliable transportation for extended periods.
The expansion of electric mobility in Nigeria comes as the country continues to face pressure to reduce transport-related emissions while providing affordable mobility options for citizens.
Motorcycles remain an important component of urban and commercial transportation in many Nigerian cities, particularly for people who rely on two-wheelers for passenger movement and deliveries.
The shift towards electric motorcycles could therefore contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with conventional petrol-powered motorcycles, while also lowering operating costs for riders.
Spiro has positioned its battery-swapping network as an important part of its strategy to support wider adoption of electric motorcycles.
The system allows riders to exchange batteries through dedicated stations, helping to address concerns about charging time and the availability of charging infrastructure.
The company’s expansion also reflects growing interest from businesses and consumers in alternative transportation technologies as energy costs and environmental concerns continue to influence mobility choices.
The West Africa Sustainability Summit serves as a platform for recognising organisations involved in environmental stewardship, social impact and sustainable business practices across the region.
Spiro’s award places its electric mobility operations among initiatives being recognised for their contribution to sustainable development and the transition towards cleaner transportation.
The recognition also highlights the growing role of electric vehicle companies in Nigeria’s emerging clean mobility sector, where infrastructure development, affordability and user adoption remain important factors in determining the pace of the transition.
As Spiro continues to expand its electric motorcycle fleet and battery-swapping infrastructure, the company is seeking to increase access to electric mobility while supporting a shift away from conventional fuel-dependent transportation.
