The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has called for a regional economic programme focused on job creation, agriculture and natural resource development to expand opportunities for young people across the North-East.
KACRAN National President, Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, made the call in a statement, urging the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to work with the six state governors to establish stronger economic opportunities for residents.
Bello said creating jobs for unemployed youths, including graduates of tertiary institutions, could improve livelihoods and provide productive alternatives to criminal activities.
He also called for an agricultural expansion covering crop production, livestock and fisheries, saying increased investment in the sectors could strengthen food security, expand agricultural exports and reduce dependence on imported food.
According to him, the region’s economic development should also include the exploration of its natural resources to create additional opportunities for employment and investment.
Bello said stronger economic activity would complement ongoing reconstruction efforts in communities affected by insurgency and contribute to sustaining peace across the region.
He commended the NEDC for its interventions in infrastructure, education, skills acquisition and support for communities affected by insecurity.
He said the Commission had constructed and rehabilitated schools, houses and public offices, as well as roads, drainage systems, bridges and culverts across the region.
Bello added that NEDC had trained teachers and residents in various skills to promote self-reliance and economic recovery.
He said KACRAN had also benefited from some of the Commission’s livestock-related programmes, including the provision of potable water for pastoral communities, animal feeds and palliatives for internally displaced persons.
The KACRAN leader urged the Commission to build on its reconstruction efforts by placing greater emphasis on creating an economic base capable of generating sustainable livelihoods across the region.
“KACRAN urgently calls on NEDC to partner with North-East Governors for massive job creation, agricultural revolution and exploration of natural resources,” Bello said.
He also commended NEDC Managing Director, Alhaji Mohammed Goni Alkali, Director of Administration and Finance, Dr Garba Iliya, and other officials for their contributions to the development of the North-East.
