The Bauchi, Gombe and Jigawa state governments have committed more than N35 billion to flood and erosion control projects aimed at protecting communities, reclaiming degraded land and restoring the environment.
The interventions, which include drainage construction, gully reclamation, tree planting and environmental restoration, are being implemented to reduce the impact of flooding, erosion and land degradation across the three states.
Stakeholders in the environmental sector disclosed this during inspections of projects being undertaken in the states.
In Bauchi, the state government is implementing a N29.7 billion flood and gully erosion control project in partnership with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) programme.
The Project Engineer of ACReSAL in Bauchi, Mukhtar Giade, said the intervention was part of a broader effort to address flooding and erosion in vulnerable communities across the state.
The 15.2-kilometre project, funded by the World Bank, is designed to control stormwater, reclaim degraded land and check gully erosion in parts of Bauchi metropolis.
The Bauchi State Government is contributing 40 per cent of the contract sum and has committed an additional N1 billion to compensate landowners whose properties are affected by the project.
