The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has stepped up inspections of mining and quarry sites across the territory to enforce safety, environmental and operational regulations.
The monitoring exercise, carried out by the Department of Solid Minerals and Allied Matters (DSMAM), recently covered quarry and mining operations in Bwari Area Council, where officials assessed compliance with approved mining standards.
The inspection focused on workplace safety, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), environmental management and the availability of mandatory operational documents.
Officials also verified operators’ mining licences, surface rent receipts and mine clearance permits as part of efforts to curb unauthorised activities.
Shemang said the FCTA was willing to maintain a transparent working relationship with legitimate mining operators but would take action against businesses operating outside regulatory requirements.
He warned that operators who fail to pay the required surface rent or obtain clearance permits could face sanctions, including suspension or closure.
The official added that the administration would enforce the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing mining activities in the FCT.
The intensified inspections come amid concerns over unregulated quarrying and the environmental and safety risks associated with mining and industrial rock blasting, particularly in vulnerable areas.
While some of the sites inspected were found to be compliant, others received compliance notices over shortcomings involving PPE, safety signage and documentation.
Shemang urged mining operators to work closely with DSMAM and comply with safety requirements, noting that stronger adherence to regulations was necessary to protect workers, host communities and the environment.
He said the department would continue monitoring mining activities to promote public safety, environmental sustainability and responsible management of the FCT’s mineral resources.
