UNEP warns world near dangerous climate change threshold

By Abbas Nazil

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has warned that the world is rapidly approaching a dangerous climate change threshold as countries continue to fall short of commitments made under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said current efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are insufficient to keep global warming within the internationally agreed limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The 1.5°C target was established under the Paris Agreement as an effort to prevent the most severe consequences of climate change.

Scientists and climate experts have warned that exceeding the threshold would increase the risks associated with extreme weather, rising sea levels, damage to agricultural production and other climate-related impacts.

The UNEP report indicates that countries have not made enough progress toward reducing emissions to a level consistent with the Paris climate goal.

According to the report, limiting the damage from global warming will require emissions from the burning of fossil fuels to fall dramatically and ultimately reach net zero.

It also suggests that removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere could become necessary to help address emissions that cannot be eliminated through conventional reductions.

The warning comes as countries continue to experience increasingly severe climate-related disasters, highlighting the growing consequences of insufficient action on global emissions.

The United Nations therefore urged countries to strengthen climate action while also preparing communities and infrastructure for worsening climate impacts.

The report underscores the growing gap between international climate commitments and actual progress in reducing emissions.

The 1.5°C threshold remains a central benchmark in global climate policy because every additional increase in global temperatures is expected to intensify risks to people, ecosystems and economies.

With countries still struggling to meet existing climate commitments, the United Nations warning reinforces the need for faster emissions reductions, stronger adaptation measures and greater investment in efforts to protect communities from the effects of a warming planet.

The report ultimately presents a stark choice for governments: accelerate efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for unavoidable climate impacts, or face increasingly severe consequences as global temperatures continue to rise.
