South Africa’s energy regulator approves 124 renewable projects offering 804MW

Australia and Palau have strengthened cooperation on renewable energy, with a major grid upgrade expected to increase Palau’s renewable electricity generation to 25 per cent and cut diesel consumption by more than one million litres annually.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr visited Palau’s first large-scale solar power plant at Ngatpang on Babeldaob, where they marked the delivery of additional battery storage under a new Australian-backed investment.

The solar facility was financed through a $31.4 million package from the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP), while a further $16.4 million investment will upgrade Palau’s electricity grid and double the facility’s energy storage capacity.

The project is expected to strengthen Palau’s energy security while reducing its dependence on imported diesel and improving the reliability and affordability of electricity for households, businesses and public institutions.

The leaders’ visit followed the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders’ Meeting, where Albanese announced an Australian contribution of $1.89 million towards the proposed establishment of a Pacific Renewable Energy Commissioner.

The proposed commissioner will help Pacific countries attract investment, coordinate renewable energy development and support the region’s ambition of achieving a 100 per cent renewable energy future.

Australia also announced a $25 million, five-year partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme to support shared climate and environmental priorities.

In addition, Australia will provide $1.7 million to the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner and $1 million for the Unlocking Blue Pacific Prosperity initiative as part of its continued support for regional ocean leadership.

Albanese said the partnership with Palau demonstrated how regional cooperation could deliver cleaner and more reliable energy while supporting climate action.

Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen said the proposed Renewable Energy Commissioner would help bring governments, investors and development partners together to accelerate renewable energy projects across the Pacific.

Pacific Island Affairs Minister Pat Conroy said Australia recognised climate change as a major priority for Pacific nations and would continue working with the region to improve energy reliability and affordability.

The initiatives come ahead of the Pacific Pre-COP meeting in Fiji and a leaders’ event in Tuvalu, as Australia and Pacific countries seek to strengthen their influence ahead of international climate negotiations at COP31.
