Nigerian Navy sensitises personnel on illegal, unregulated fishing combat

The Nigerian Navy through its Headquarters Western Command has carried out a training aimed at strengthening personnel capacity to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing within the Nigerian maritime space.

The training, accorsong to a statement by the Navy on Monday, was carried out through a fisheries awareness lecture facilitated by the Federal Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

According to the agency, the training provided practical knowledge on fisheries laws, licensing requirements, prohibited fishing practices and enforcement procedures, to improve effectiveness during maritime patrols and boarding operations.

Speaking during the workshop, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, emphasised the economic and environmental threat posed by IUU fishing and the importance of inter-agency corporation in protecting Nigeria’s maritime resources.

The initiative underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to professional capacity development and safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment in support of the blue economy.
