NBTI unveils Tinubu Light Initiative, targets one million MSMEs

By Abbas Nazil

The National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) has unveiled the Tinubu Light Initiative, a nationwide renewable-energy programme aimed at providing affordable and reliable clean energy to one million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises across Nigeria.

The initiative, launched in Abuja on August 6, 2026, during the National Showcase of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026, is designed to tackle high energy costs and unreliable electricity supply, which have continued to undermine business growth and industrial productivity in the country.

The programme is being implemented under the leadership of the NBTI Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kazeem Kolawole Raji, as part of the Federal Government’s broader drive to use science, technology and innovation to support economic development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the NBTI, the initiative will enable businesses to reduce their dependence on petrol and diesel generators by facilitating access to affordable renewable-energy solutions.

The expected reduction in energy expenditure could allow MSMEs to redirect savings towards purchasing raw materials, acquiring equipment, employing workers, expanding operations and improving productivity.

The initiative is also expected to generate more than 50,000 direct jobs through the development of a renewable-energy value chain involving technicians, engineers, installers, manufacturers, distributors, maintenance specialists and entrepreneurs.

Dr Raji said the programme was conceived in response to the high energy costs faced by businesses because of unreliable electricity and dependence on fossil-fuel-powered generators.

He said the broader objective was to create an environment where energy would no longer constitute a major obstacle to enterprise development.

Beyond energy access, the Tinubu Light Initiative is expected to support local manufacturing and technology commercialisation by creating opportunities for Nigerian innovators and renewable-energy companies to develop and deploy locally produced solutions.

The programme is closely linked to the NextGen Innovation Challenge, which seeks to identify, nurture and commercialise innovative Nigerian technologies.

While NextGen focuses on developing innovative solutions, the Tinubu Light Initiative is expected to provide a pathway for deploying suitable technologies at scale to address practical energy challenges confronting businesses.

Another major development announced during the launch was a proposed $500 million financing opportunity for solar power projects in Nigerian public universities.

Yosef Abramowitz, Chief Executive Officer of Gigawatt Global, said the company was prepared to provide up to $500 million in project financing for solar plants across Nigerian universities, potentially covering up to 90 per cent of capital requirements for qualifying projects.

The proposed university solar projects could improve electricity supply for teaching, research, digital learning and internet connectivity while potentially extending clean-energy benefits to surrounding communities.

The initiative is also expected to contribute to Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner energy by reducing reliance on petrol and diesel generators and promoting renewable-energy technologies.

Stakeholders at the unveiling included government officials, representatives of development organisations, renewable-energy companies, academia, private-sector leaders and diplomatic missions.

The event also attracted representatives of several federal and state institutions, including the National Information Technology Development Agency, National Space Research and Development Agency, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, National Universities Commission, Standards Organisation of Nigeria and Industrial Training Fund.

With its one-million-MSME target, projected job creation and emphasis on technology commercialisation, the Tinubu Light Initiative has the potential to influence Nigeria’s energy, enterprise and employment landscape.

If effectively implemented, the programme could lower operating costs for businesses, stimulate renewable-energy investment, strengthen local manufacturing, create employment and improve the competitiveness of Nigerian enterprises.

The initiative therefore represents an attempt to link affordable energy with broader economic transformation, positioning renewable power not only as a solution to electricity challenges but also as a catalyst for enterprise growth, innovation and sustainable development.
