Egypt plans to raise renewable energy’s share of its electricity generation to 45% by 2028 as the government steps up investment in clean energy, battery storage and domestic manufacturing.

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi reviewed the country’s renewable energy strategy on Wednesday during a meeting in New Alamein with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat and Concord Engineering and Contracting Chairman Ahmed El-Abd.

The strategy includes expanding renewable energy projects and battery energy storage systems to improve grid stability and ensure a reliable power supply, presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said.

Esmat said investments in Egypt’s electricity and renewable energy sector have reached about EGP 5 trillion since 2014.

The government is also seeking greater international technical and financial support for renewable energy projects as Egypt strengthens its position as a regional energy hub and expands its capacity to manufacture electrical equipment locally.

Al-Sisi called for more partnerships that use locally manufactured components, particularly battery storage systems, and urged further localisation of renewable energy industries to boost energy security and domestic value creation.

He also directed the government to expand local manufacturing and value-added industries linked to black sands, fertilisers and rare-earth elements to maximise the economic benefits of Egypt’s natural resources.
