With a population of more than 24 million people and growing, Lagos State is stepping up efforts to guarantee steady food supply through a new initiative called ‘Produce for Lagos’.
The programme, launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, is designed to link farmers directly to the state under structured agreements with guaranteed prices.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, said the initiative will secure food for the state while giving farmers a stable market that reduces risk and improves earnings.
She explained that the central database of registered farmers will help Lagos plan its interventions, channel support services and manage food distribution more effectively.
Officials say the programme will not only support food production within Lagos but also strengthen partnerships with farmers in major food-producing states.
The government expects the scheme to stabilise prices, cut post-harvest waste and promote trade flows between Lagos and other regions.
Analysts note that Lagos consumes more food than any other state in Nigeria, making security of supply a priority for both government and producers.
Olusanya urged farmers to register through the ministry’s official channels to take part in the initiative.
