NatureNews poll shows strong support for clean energy as emissions’ best solution

By Abbas Nazil

Respondents in a poll conducted across NatureNews Africa’s social media platforms believe that switching to clean energy is the most-effective way of reducing carbon emissions in Africa.

The survey, run simultaneously on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn, showed that 49 percent of participants preferred renewable energy solutions such as solar, wind, and hydropower as the best strategy for tackling carbon output.

Sustainable transport, including cycling, electric vehicles, and improved public transit, was ranked second, gaining 27 percent of the votes.

Tree planting, a method often promoted as a natural carbon sink, came in third with 24 percent support.

Notably, reducing plastic use—commonly cited in environmental campaigns—received no votes in the poll, suggesting the public sees it as less directly connected to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

NatureNews Africa stands by the findings as a reflection of growing awareness of structural solutions such as energy and transport reforms over lifestyle adjustments, underscoring the importance of long-term systemic change in Africa’s climate fight.

The poll reflects a shift in environmental priorities, placing renewable energy adoption firmly at the center of public discourse on climate action.
