CAMIC Urges Renewed Commitment to Environmental Sustainability in Africa

By Obiabin Onukwugha

Advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has called for a renewed commitment to environmental sustainability to address issues of climate change across African countries.

CAMIC also emphasized the need for immediate and collective action to protect our planet.

The body observed that in recent years, Africa has experienced unprecedented climate-related events, including severe droughts, floods, and heat waves, affecting millions of people and ecosystems.

According to CAMIC, these events underscore the urgent need to adopt sustainable practices that mitigate environmental harm and foster resilience against climate change.

The body made the call in a statement issued in Abuja at the weekend by the its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, who described the call as necessary in the light of increasing climate change challenges and environmental degradation across the continent

“The time to act is now. Environmental sustainability is not just a choice but a necessity for the survival and well-being of our communities. We must integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of our lives, from policy-making to everyday activities, to ensure a healthy and habitable planet for future generations,” the statement read in part.

The body pledged its readiness in raising awareness and promoting initiatives that encourage environmental stewardship.

It stated: “This year, the organization plans to host various events, including the upcoming quiz competition involving 8 schools (4 private and 4 government) to engage the youth in discussions about climate change and environmental conservation.

“Through these efforts, CAMIC aims to inspire individuals, organizations, and governments to take proactive steps toward sustainability. The organization invites all stakeholders to join hands in creating a sustainable future.”
