The federal government has announced a comprehensive housing initiative, allocating N126.5 billion for the construction of 50,000 housing units annually.
This initiative, announced over the weekend, aims to promote inclusivity and affordability, with a special focus on vulnerable groups.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, highlighted this strategy at a ministerial briefing in Abuja, where he emphasized that the projects currently underway include 6,612 housing units being developed across the country, facilitated by state governors who have provided land for these endeavors.
“Our inclusive approach is not just about building houses; it’s about creating integrated living communities that cater to all income brackets and address the needs of marginalized groups such as persons with disabilities, women, and the elderly,” Dangiwa stated.
A core component of the strategy is the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates. Renewed Hope Cities are designed as integrated communities with a variety of housing options, from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom duplexes, targeting a broad spectrum of income levels.
In contrast, the Renewed Hope Estates focus on providing semi-detached bungalows for low- and medium-income earners, with flexible designs that allow for expansion as beneficiaries’ incomes grow.
The initiative also includes urban and slum upgrading programs aimed at improving infrastructure and basic services in informal settlements, enhancing the overall living conditions for residents.
This housing strategy aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda, which focuses on economic growth, poverty reduction, and creating an enabling environment for investment.
Dangiwa underscored that the housing and urban development sector is being positioned as a critical enabler of social and economic prosperity in Nigeria.
The federal government’s budgetary allocation for these projects underscores its commitment to addressing housing challenges and improving living standards across the nation.
This holistic approach not only targets the construction of new housing units but also seeks to implement sector-wide reforms and policies that promote inclusivity and sustainability in urban development.
