In a significant initiative aimed at addressing erosion challenges and managing marginal lands in Anambra state, a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Environment embarked on a crucial tree-planting project.
This strategic move, aligned with the 2023 appropriation, commenced with a warm welcome from Engr. Felix Odimegwu, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, at the state secretariat.
Subsequently, the delegation ventured into the field to inspect various erosion sites within the state.
Mr. Okunuga Mathew Olufemi and Mr. Igbinosa Osakide, representatives from the Federal delegation, elaborated on the central goal of their tree-planting initiative — the restoration of shorelines and effective erosion control.
They emphasized the broader impact of this proactive measure, not only contributing to the augmentation of the state’s forest cover but also playing a pivotal role in mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Expressing appreciation for the initiative, Commissioner Engr. Odimegwu underscored the severity of the erosion challenges faced by Anambra state.
He revealed that all 160 communities out of a total of 179 have felt the impact of erosion, resulting in the loss of nearly 30% of the state’s land area.
Commissioner Odimegwu stressed the urgency for federal assistance to counteract this pervasive menace and rehabilitate the affected land, farmland, and properties.
Highlighting the Soludo administration’s commitment to environmental issues, the commissioner assured that every tree planted in the state would be protected and supported by the government.
Mrs. Achugamonye, the Director of Forestry in the State Environment Ministry, reiterated her dedication to collaborating with the delegation to achieve the goals of the tree-planting project.
This tree-centric approach signifies a concerted effort between federal and state authorities to combat erosion challenges, enhance the state’s green cover, and promote sustainable environmental practices in Anambra.
